how does a fox look like?

i was walking by a mailbox today that was built into this huge thing that looked like a tiny house. on top of it was something i perceived as being a little fox statue. i thought that was a really cute and unique statue to have. when i came closer i realized it was supposed to be a puppy dog. this made me aware of not really knowing what makes a fox a fox, if you know what i mean...

the thing is, that unless i actually draw an animal at least once from a photo, i don't really know how it looks like. you can try it out yourself:

right now, take a pen or pencil and draw a sketch of a koala, a sloth, a manatee, a fox or whatever animal you've never drawn before, without first looking at any picture for reference. i just tried it out with my hubby. he did quite well i must say, but we had to laugh at his koala. it looked like a mutated bunny. when we looked at an actual photo we realized we both forgot what funny facial proportions they have!

so after mistaking a puppy for a fox i came home and looked at photos of foxes and made a few sketches. i enjoyed trying to develop my "own" fox drawing style, i'll continue with that another day.

We have a fox here and that is what it looks like!
We now also have coyatoes and bobcats so sometimes it gets a little scary when I am out.

What I love about foxes is all the wonderful variations of their look people come up with. They are all over Etsy, and everywhere really. But all so unique and all so fox-ish! Great drawings!
