people in pictures - do you post them?

last sunday my hubby and i did a photo shoot of two adorable and very active little girls in front of a majestic tree that was just covered in golden foliage. between funny poses, climbing up trees, goofy smiles, and decorating each other and the photographer with leaves, we had loads of fun trying to get both sisters in the same picture, managing to capture some perfect moments until a whiny "i need to pee" gave the cue that it was time to pack up the camera equipment and call it a day.

perhaps i might be able to post a few more pictures of the photo session, but i'd have to find some that won't really show the girls. their parents had decided a while ago that their kids are not supposed to have an online presence (to the extent possible), which i absolutely want to respect. if i post pictures with other recognizable people in them, i really try to be good about making sure everybody (including the parents if kids are involved) are okay with me posting their photos. to me it's not even a matter of if someone looks flattering on the picture or not since that is a matter of perception.

how do you handle this subject of privacy on your blogs or other public spaces
on the web?

I have a similar dread of an online presence... I blog and etsy with an alias and try not to post photos that can be identified as me (although modeling a hat without showing your face is a tricky one!!).

I am even stricter when it comes to other people, I totally respect their privacy and I think it's so important with children who might not appreciate finding childhood pictures of themselves online when they are older.

I have recently been thinking about using my real name tho...

I don't have a problem with it - as a scrapbooker my kids were publicly visible years ago - but try to be careful to respect others. I ask before sharing photos that include other kids, and get permission / releases from clients...

i do think many people blog and post pictures about/of their children very casually and sometimes i'm not sure what these children will think in 20 years or so. i ask before i post pictures of other people. mostly they're fine with it, just with children and babies i realize people are more sensitive.

i do think that anonymous pictures are totally fine though (like just showing them from the back or so). and especially if somebody takes photos of me and my family on a professional level i would always allow them to post the pictures. i think it's kind of a pain to create something really good and then not being allowed to use it to promote one's work.

as long as the photos are tasteful, i do not mind people posting photos of me at all. i think there is a very big difference between photos of me by the pool posted without my knowing on facebook - and creatively well done and tasteful pictures of me put on a blog.

I have a couple of friends that do not like to be on the internet with their photos and that is fine for me- you have to respect this. I have some people that are ok as long as you do not write out their name - which I think it also a way. I actually have a hard time photographing people I do not know as I always have the feeling to intrude. Interesting discussion for sure.

I ask them and if they don't want to be shown I edit the pic so you can't recognize the face anymore.

Good question! My posts show us a lot, as I blog about homeschooling. Many people are completely anonymous though. I love the color in your shot! Visiting from SST. :)

This is a tough one that I've grappled with as well. I felt uncomfortable using an alias and giving my kids nicknames in my blog - it just didn't feel right, and inhibited my writing. I call my two oldest the Teen and Tween, and no longer post their photos. My husband has asked not to be mentioned by name, and there are very few photos of him in the blog. As for others, I usually ask if it's okay first.
