family time - anybody want a bear hug?
we're enjoying lots of family time right now with immediate and extended family which inspired some of this week's pencil sketches. this one is of a polar bear mom with her two cubs. i thought it was such a cute picture of them keeping close and warm. looking at the photo though i was wondering how big they might be in real life. i know these bears to be huge, but it's hard to imagine without anything right next to them to compare sizes with.
out of curiosity i looked up some facts on polar bears, particularly on their sizes:
the babies are much smaller than human babies when they're born. they are the size of a rat and weigh little more than a pound. they can grow to full man size in a year if they have lots of food. male polar bears may grow 10 feet tall and weigh over 1400 pounds. females reach seven feet and weigh 650 pounds.
i wonder how a bear hug from one of them feels like... :)

Gorgeous sketch of a beautiful moment. A mothers love...what could be better.
Watching polar bears can make you forget how dangerous they can be, especially while around their cubs. Looking forward to get a chance to hold one of them, though :)
And the sketch is exact to the smallest detail. Great work!
