i finished my mairéad hat over the holidays, wore it once or twice and then frogged it. i cast on a new hat with the same yarn right away, with a little snowflake i designed myself. and it fits! :) it was my first try with colorwork, so it turned out a little tight. but i'm looking forward to more projects like this in the future!
new year, new knitting beginnings. i joined a knitalong over at woolful (do you know the woolful podcast for fiber folk? it's great for listening to while knitting, very inspirational!). we are knitting a Nordic Wind Shawl. i like the pattern a lot, it is simple and knits up quickly. i'm using Létt Lopi yarn from Iceland. so far i'm thinking it is very rough and scratchy, so i will not wear this shawl anywhere near my skin. but to wrap around my shoulders on a cold winter evening, yes! it might soften up when it is soaked, we'll see.
we made a trip to the library today and i brough home 2 children's books (for me!) that have been recommended to me. but the arrival of series 5 of Downton Abbey on my doorstep today will mean less reading time ;)
what are you knitting and reading? joining ginny again today.

You designed quite the adorable hat Sylvia, the snowflake adds the perfect touch!
Love the hat with the snowflake. And it looks great one you :)
Super cute hat. I love going to the library and seeing what my daughter comes home with. Last week she picked up So You're Going to be a Big Sister. I think she picked it because the cover is pink since she's not really going to be a big sister!!
Cute hat.
Hi Sylvia, this is my first time visiting.....nice job on your first colorwork. Love the snowflake. I don't know how many times I made a hat for myself, wore it a few times then ripped it out to make a different one with the same yarn. I'm guessing we are not the only ones. This past xmas I delved into colorwork for the first time and also made up my own toddler hat/ sweater design for my 1year old that I will be offering up for free very soon.Love the creative freedom with colorwork...so many possibilities!
love the hat, that snowflake just makes it pop! Off to see your knit a long :)
i really love how the hat turned out!
