in my basket and at my bedside

i'm still knitting on my garter stitch shawl, i took a few days knitting break from it. i'm following the pattern of the Rae, but this will not work out 100%. the problem is that the skein that i'm working with has 100 yards less than the pattern calls for.

hm, i have a few scraps left of the same yarn, which i will try to use up, but it will still not be enough. i've now started decreasing a little faster on the way back. it will give the shawl an asymmetrical look, but maybe i will be able to make it long enough for actually wrapping round my neck with the yardage that i have.

that above photo is such a typical glimpse into what a large part of my everyday life is about right now. although it's definitely more playing than knitting at the moment. now that i look at that random shot i realize how great it is that spencer never went for my knitting. i can just toss it anywhere and he'd just leave it. there are some library books in the photo too, one about how bread is made which i'm especially fond of, unfortunately it's not so popular with the little man, he prefers fire engine stories :(

i've also started making a little knitted nest, according to this pattern. if i don't like it as a nest or don't feel like knitting the eggs i was thinking i might felt it in the washing mashine and then put it on the window sill, where we keep all our little treasures and collections from our walks to the park.

as for the reading, at my bedside there is still Pioneer Women, which i am enjoying very much. it's amazing, what these women gave up, what they made work, how they made the best of what (very very little) they had to create a home and care for their families...  it inspires me to do the same right now. to focus on the joys, on our day-to-day lives right now, on what is truly essential and what makes a home HOME, no matter what we might be wishing for for the future, it's the now that counts.

i'm joining Ginny's yarn along again this week. what are you knitting and reading? i'll try my best to stop by and visit you!

Oh, you're knitting a Rae! I wear mine all the time. And you know once it's wrapped around your neck you may not even notice it's not asymmetrical. I have also seen people finish off the last few inches in a boldly different colour. Might you consider something like that?
Your little guy is so sweet to leave your knitting be. My kiddos are mostly good at that too - although littlest sister LOVES to grab it while I'm working. ;)

I was going to suggest exactly what Rachel did, just add a different color is you find it's not long enough.
The wee one here never touches my knitting either, but she does like to play with my counter!
I hope you have a happy yarn along day.

I like the thrill of not knowing if I have enough yarn. I do not like it if I don't have enough yarn. I hope you can complete the scarf, it is so beautiful!!!

Ohh I love the Rae pattern. My little one has ALWAYS touched my knitting and it frustrates me! (Although at the same time I'm honored because usually I find her with it on her lap, trying to figure out the needles and saying "I'm knitting like Momma") :-)

it looks great so far....love the colors!!

Ahh to have my littles not touch my knitting! Both like it though. My oldest likes to try and "help" me, and my youngest...well he just likes to grab the yarn and run, clearly a fun game for him :-)

some patterns really lend themselves to shockingly different colors added in--this may be one!!! (I just had a really close close close call with my latest knit on my blog today, too!)

I LOVE that yarn! It's fabulous! It sounds like you have a handle on the problem. Sometimes truly awesome and creative ideas come from cumbersome restraints. Good luck!

Well I hope your adjustments work out!
The books look fun (I love homemade bread so I know I'd enjoy that one too LOL).
My two have always touched my knitting- which is why I got in the habit of hiding it in a bag lol

I love the color of your yarn! The gunmetal grey contrasted with those streaks of bright blue is just striking.

It's such a beautiful colour yarn, Sylvia! I'm currently knitting up a moss stitch red scarf, getting ready for autumn/winter - I'm loving the new season colours xx

That color is great. I am planning on knitting a nest at some point myself. Whether a nest or a treasure bowl, they are awesome little additions to the home!

even with a shortage of yardage, i bet that would make a great nursing cover or scarf for you. love the colors.

also, i laughed when i saw the pic. it looks like the table beside my chair on any given day...a stack of books, knitting, and the nacho's trains ;-)
