Oh my, that is some red clay! Does your garden produce in it or do you add something to loosen it up?

@ Tracey:
it produces weeds incredibly well! ;)
for everything else we need to mix in some more fertile dirt.

We have that same red clay...weeds do grow so beautifully in it....not much else. What is going into your garden?

Wow... what beautiful soil! Must live more southern than I do. I can see where drainage would be an issue with this clay! It is so pretty, though. (And you live near some water... how fun!)

Yikes! That is dense dirt! We have loads of rocks and pebbles in our dirt that make it hard to shovel.

I love the composition of this photo!
Side note: I am hosting a gathering of gardeners on Tuesdays. Will you join us?

What are you planting? Is that clay something you purchased or does it naturally found that color near you?

@ Ellen:
This clay is all that we have! So we have to buy potting soil, manure, mulch, etc. and mix it into the orange clay if we want anything pretty to grow. As much as I hate how it isn't fertile, I absolutely love that bright orange color!

@ everybody:

we planted the perennial that survived my care, putting it into the ground (it was in a planter before). i forgot how it was called but it attracts humming birds and flowers all summer long!
