the blue stare - finger painting

ever since i've lost a major part of my archival files (i wrote about it here) i've been browsing the few recovered files to see what might still be usable (some are just thumbnail size or corrupted to the point where just half the file shows up). the file above survived the digital disaster. i had posted it years ago on my old blog so most of you have not seen it yet. it was part of my portfolio when i applied for art school.

this painting of a stern faced short haired woman (inspired by fashion photography) was created by using my fingers only, no brushes. also, i only used black, blue and white paint since i thought this was all that's needed to bring across the cold stare and highlight the interesting lighting and contrast. my wild guess without having seen it in a long time is that the size is approx. 23x18 inches or so.

i don't know about you, but due to my bad experiences with how poorly airlines take care of paying customers' luggage i'm always scared to transport any type of original artwork by air. the exception is if the artwork is small enough to stay with me as part of my hand luggage. so next time i go to germany i'll have to dig this painting up at my parents' house and take high quality photos of it. that way i can take just the photo files with me and print it locally and frame it. seems like this would be the safest way of going about, don't you think?

have a great start to the week! make it a creative one!

Powerful expression on her face! I can see it's not your usual style and I'm happy you got to partly retrieve your early portfolio. Thank you for all your sweet comments -- your blog is a true inspiration and I'm a follower!

This painting is beautiful! So impressive.

And I had completely missed the post about your lost files, yikes that's awful! I have lost things over the years, but never anything that was that irreplaceable. But today I save things anywhere, on external hard drives on the computer and online. That's the beauty of Blogger I think, that you have all the pictures you've ever uploaded on picasa. Although some quality might be lost. But still. They are there.

Hope your weekend's been great! Take care! Love Karro

Simona, just your fingers?!!! I am sitting here with my mouth hanging open. She is amazing! I do have to tell you that you inspire me to explore my creative side and I am very grateful to you. It is so easy for me to push it aside as the day to day chores take over, but when I draw or paint my day just seems brighter. Thanks you for sharing part of yourself here!

I like the textural quality of it. Her hair reminds me of feathers. Reading this post reminds me that it's been awhile since I've backed up any files on my computer.
