a few days ago i was looking at pictures and videos of my little nephew on flickr, had a sketch block on my lap, and had pencils lying on the table. it wasn't planned but I just couldn't help myself: this led to a small pencil portrait of him. now I have my baby nephew smiling at me from next to the fire place.
one of my art students had asked if i would paint a portrait for him of his 3 grandchildren. he's been thinking of a unique present for them, something they don't already have. i think portraits are a great gift idea, everybody loves them! i made one with charcoal for our very good friends' wedding anniversary. they got it framed and hung it up immediately. it really made me happy to see how much they liked it.
Update to this post 10 years later: Thank you everyone for your amazing support!
In the past decade I have enjoyed creating hundreds of custom portraits, every single one is an honor and a privilege for me.

wirklich toll simona!!! ich finde es eine schöne begabung, wenn man so genau zeichnen kann. Mein papa kann auch so fein zeichnen... mir hat er's nicht vererbt :) ich kann eher grob und großflächig malen
Thanks, Kelly and Sylvia! Glad you like it.
@ Steffi: Also auf jeden Fall hat dir dein Papa dann 'ne ganze Menge Kreativität vererbt und ein gutes Auge für Details!
Love this most beautiful picture. When I look at it right next to the fireplace, this little guy just makes me smile! How gifted you are!
Beautiful picture, you are so incredibly talented.
Wish I had the ability to draw my little boy....or an artistic sister who could :)
