art in my living room: "mach die äuglein zu"

this painting is called "mach die äuglein zu", it has that very sentence written on it. in case you wonder what it means... it's german and basically means when translated "close your little eyes". this is what my mom would say to me when she wanted me to fall asleep. (she still sometimes says that to me when she sees my eye lids getting heavy).

closing the eyes opens the way to a colorful dreamworld. sometimes my sister sylvia and i used to rub our eyes on weekend nights when we were allowed to sleep in the same room and call it "augenkino" ("eye movies"). full of excitement we'd shout out to each other what colors would appear and whether we saw swirls, flashes, blinking stars, or shapes.

"mach die äuglein zu" is an acrylic painting on an 18 x 24 inch canvas that is currently sitting on an easel in my living room. i had originally painted it for our bedroom but in the house we live in right now the painting would clash with the blue and pink flower wallpaper that we never yet removed from our bedroom walls. to the largest extent it was painted with my fingers, some of the letters were painted with a brush.

how are you decorating your living room? do you have art on the wall? lot's of color? family photos? i'd love to know!

You know what's funny? I just went into the living room to see what's on the walls and there's absolutely nothing! The walls are a great sage green color and I have lots of family photos on every flat surface, but nothing hanging :) guess I better fix that!!

When I first saw that picture in your old appartment and figured what the letters meant, I got really emotional. How time flies by.... Actually only from your picture I realized, how often I used that sentence when you were little. And still now I love hugging little ones, when they get tired and are about to fall asleep - like sweet Spencer last Monday!
