on being a homemaker

these are two layouts that were published in the winter issue of Scrap-Art-Zine. the first is a wintery one about some wonderful winter memories shared with Danielle!

the second one was inspired by a 50ies style advertisement, and i think i chose the background paper according to that theme (somehow it reminds me of a pattern on an apron). the layout contains two of my most favourite quotes about the work i (predominantly) do nowadays (i also do occupational therapy in an old folks home, write and sell some photography, but most of the time, i work within the home). i strongly dislike the titles "stay at home mum" or "housewife", they limit the precious work we do to just certain areas or aspects. i prefer homemaker! so here come the quotes, maybe they're just what you need this morning:

When someone asks where you work, don’t answer, “I don’t work; I stay at home.” Instead, answer, “I work at home.” When you manage your home, plan the meals, handle the finances, juggle the calendar, and make sure that family members enter the world relatively groomed and sanitized, you work a lot.
Tsh Oxenreider - on Simple Mom

“The mission of developing the home environment has belonged primarily to women in past civilizations.  Whoever may now assume this responsibility, the role of homemaker remains essential to human destiny.  Today, although some of us enjoy the greatest affluence the world has ever known, we find that developing a home environment that serves the human spirit, a home of beauty, order, and simplicity, remains a very challenging task.”
from a book called "Montessori from the Start", via The Making Life

have lovely (homemaking or what ever you do) day!

I have always used the term homemaker too. Being a homemaker is the hardest, most fulling job I have ever had and I love it!

Haven't seen any of your layouts in a while, I love them!
I find Homemaking a good term as well, it doesn't have the negative connotation "housewife" has, and "stay at home mom" sounds like somebody that stays home all day and doesn't do anything.

oh goodness, and work it is! Sometimes I find myself missing my full time job managing a large book store. At least then I could leave my work and relax a little!

I deeply appreciated and enjoyed the time I was granted to spend with my children inside and outside the house. And I often realized that working at home used to have a bad connotation, although the working day of a mother at home starts earlier and ends later than working hours at offices, stores etc., just as Laura Emily stated. Indeed, all your energy goes into your family -which is a real blessing for parents and children.

Oh, I love this post, and the post from The Making Life. I am a homemaker too, but my husband is a doctor. I always feel so awkward in a room of doctors when this topic comes up. I have felt for a long time that I need to come up with a response to the question, "So what do you do?" that doesn't leave me feeling like I want to crawl under a rug and hide. It IS such hard AND rewarding work - and it's important! I wish there was a term that glorified it! I have on my email signature block, "House Manager" as my title :) Lovely post, and I really like the layout!

Those are gorgeous! Makes me wish I was a scrapbooker -- I just use my blog as a scrapbook instead! But there are so many beautiful scrapbook papers out there, I can't resist them -- so I try to do card-making and other projects with them.
I LOVE the homemaker one! :-)
