our "sisters only" trip to sylt

honestly, i first wasn't going to post this. i made this painting at school and it's not one of my favorite ones. what i love about it though is that it calls back to memory a trip my sister sylvia and i did. it was our first and so far last trip with just the two of us.

we really wanted to go camping on the northern german island of sylt. if i remember it right, that season had been pretty stormy already which made us unsure if we'd be able to manage putting up a tent by ourselves.

our compromise was staying at a youth hostel, the first time in a group room instead of a family room. the other traveling ladies we shared the room with were pleasant and everybody pretty much kept to themselves. at least as far as i can remember. (sylvia might be able to correct me on some details.)

one of the most memorable things was watching the sunsets and sunrises over the ocean from the dunes, always in our chic white rain jackets (which can be seen in the painting) because the weather can change from one moment to the next.

it was a wonderful little trip. now i need to go and dig out the photos (all shot in analog since it happened way back) to see if i can come up with more details to remember and smile about.

have you ever done a "siblings only" trip?
and have you ever stayed at a youth hostel and shared the room with strangers? How did that go?

yes, it was a lovely trip!! i remember the group room being so pleasant because the other girls were also just travelling by themselves or as pairs. and most of them wanted to see the sunrise on the beach, so there was no load chatting and partying in the evenings... everybody went to bed fairly early. i remember photoshoots and spending an evening sitting in a strandkorb (large beach chair) illegally, only barely being able to open the bottle of wine we brought with our camping bottle opener. it also rained a little then. but the sunset was worth it!

Sounds like a great trip! No, I've never stayed in a hostel, but I've always been intrigued. In my younger years, I'm sure I would have loved it - now? I don't know. Maybe when I'm grey haired (more than I already am) I will be less self-conscious about sleeping in a room with strangers!

Liebe Simona,
das hört sich toll an. Leider sehe ich gerade die Bilder nicht, ist wohl gerade ein Serverproblem, ich schau nachher nochmal bei dir vorbei :-)!
Viele liebe Grüße,
Yvonne

When I was 19 I spent a summer in Costa Rica doing volunteer work. I stayed in hostels while I was there and it was such an amazing experience. At first I was nervous going to a new country by myself not knowing anyone but I met some really cool people and had such a great time!

In about 2002 I was in Berlin with a friend and we shared a room with a couple of about 35 years.
I don't remember much about them, only, that we said 'hello' and 'good night'. I think there wasn't much more contact :-D
But it was all ok and nice. And anyway we only were in the room to fall in bed, fully exhausted from the city trip :)

In London I spent lot of time with my sister! But we were not alone , always with the kids :) But one evening we went together to a musical an totally enjoyed the evening! Since she has kids - and of course we love them so much - it is always very special to have an evening, just the two of us!

I LOVE sister trips! I learned so much about my only sister after traveling with her to Paris recently. A great time for growth & bonding!
