surprised by its beauty

we live in the woods. that means we have a lot of wildlife around. some is expected, such as the deer families passing through twice a day. other wildlife is less expected, or let's say it still surprises us.

a few weeks a go, for example, my husband found a black cocoon underneath a rock. half shiny, half furry. i was quite sure it was dead, but hubby didn't think so. so we put the cocoon into a box and placed it on the kitchen counter. and then nothing happened for probably a week. that made me even more sure that poor thing was dead. but one day i walked by the box and shrieked out of surprise... a huge, about 2.5 inch (6,5 cm) long moth had climbed to the top of the box! it was absolutely gorgeous!!!

after some research i found out we just had our first encounter with a giant leopard moth.

isn't it the coolest moth ever? i can't believe how beautiful its design is. i'm so glad we didn't miss out on seeing it.

what kind of wildlife do you enjoy seeing in your neighborhood?

That is a magnificent moth! I have never seen on before. I have quite a bit of wildlife living here in the country. Yesterday we had four snakes to deal with! I am not a snake fan. One was in the chicken coop and the others were in different places in my yard. It is very dry and I think they were looking for water. Shudder!!!

Wow, das Viech ist ja echt unglaublich schön!
Und sieht so unecht aus!
Aber die Beine sehen ja schon fast wie die einer Spinne aus ;)

It looks incredible in the photo. I'm terrified of moths and probably wouldn't even have the courage to get close enough to snap a pic!

That is very cool, love that moth! We don't see too much wildlife in the city. We get excited over squirrels in the park;)

Although I really don't like moths too much, this one is so beautifully designed. We here just had baby starlings and their parents visit us in the backyard.

We have a little more wildlife than we can handle! This is a visit from a bear http://treechanged.blogspot.com/2011/07/unwelcome-visitor.html
And this is other (cuter) Canadian wildlife
