pencil drawing of sami boy with dog

what do you think of when you hear about native or indigenous people, herders? how might these people look like?
whatever my mind comes up with, the people i spontaneously imagine have dark hair and dark eyes, probably dark skin as well. nevertheless, the sami people i just saw pictures of are everything the general population expect scandinavians to look like: blond and blue eyed.

yesterday i flipped through an old "reader's digest" magazine and stumbled upon beautiful pictures of scandinavian sami. unfortunately the article didn't reveal too much information about them except for letting me know they traditionally tend reindeer herds and many of them lead modern lives with internet etc. (i know wikipedia is not the best source of education, but it had some interesting info on the sami).

that article i found also had beautiful pictures of their traditional costumes. i'd like to draw some of them in color. if i do i'll post them for you to see.

Oh, Beautiful drawing!
In sweden we have news on sami language which (to me) reminds of some sort of finnish/icelandic, and it's interesting how different our country is from south to north. Sadly the samis have been very bad treated in sweden through the history, so we should be very happy that this culture still remains up here! It's so cool!

Wow, that is really interesting... Your right, when one thinks of indigenous, blonde and blue eyes do not come to mind. Check out my post on the diversity of the Brazilian people from my recent trip there here :

From early childhood onwards I've always been deeply interested in all kinds of indigenous people(s) and I've always felt like: these must be protected.
May Spencer be able to meet one of the sami one day!
Of course: your picture is stunning!!!!
