a place for the old wagon

for almost 30 years, this old wagon that my grandfather had used already, stood in the basement. my mum had dreams for it, to paint it and place it somewhere in the garden with a few flower pots on it. we got it out of the basement about 2 years ago, but then it stayed in a part of our front yard called "the woods".

one day in spring of this year, the kids and i brought the wagon out, just to realize in what a bad shape it was after all. it did not only need re-painting, it was practically falling apart. for several weeks this summer, my dad lovingly refurbished and painted it. he has childhood memories of himself and his brother sitting on top of collected firewood on this wagon, being pulled by their father, my grandfather.

i love looking out of the kitchen window and seeing the flowers on the wagon just beneath it. everybody coming up to our house passes this wagon. i'm thinking i might add a welcome sign and possibly also a pair of discarded boots and plant something in them next spring. i realize i should have taken some photos while the flowers were all in full bloom. but well, it's august and it has been very dry!

a couple of weeks ago, my cousin and i took photos of our kids in front of the wagon, all 4 great-grandchildren whom our grandfather never met. not even my sister and i ever got to know him, because he passed away shortly before simona was born. but i love that there's something right before our eyes now that makes us think of him. it's a beautiful heritage piece, and i'm so happy it's out of the basement and being used again!

It looks wonderful. Always so nice to have pieces that connect us to people from the past.

that is a perfect solution and quite a pretty one as well! I love the history behind the wagon.
